Chapter 7

A Merilee Tour Joke: Why did the elf lie in the fireplace?

He wanted to sleep like a log.

****

The next morning, while Merilee rode her stationary bike in her basement rumpus room, she watched a romantic comedy movie and made a mental list of things to do before she led this evening’s tour. Surely, this time, she would avoid any bumps and delight every guest.

Glancing down at her workout attire, she pumped hard. Her black yoga pants and gray T-shirt were a welcome break from the garden green of her elf costume. The lower level of her home was a touch cool but perfect for exercise, which she badly needed to burn off her lingering disappointment with last evening’s tour. Positioned in a corner on a periwinkle area rug next to a plaid, sectional sofa, the bike invited more action on cold winter days like today.

She adjusted the TV volume so she could hear the dialogue over the whir of the spinning wheel. The strains of “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus” swelled over a dreamy embrace, and an image of Ross’s grayish blue eyes, handsome face, and strong body appeared, so real she could almost feel his presence. His soft lips brushed her neck, his fingertips threaded through her hair, and…

Distracted by enticing fantasies, she lost her rhythm, and the momentum of the pedals jolted her legs. What just happened? Why did she allow her mind to wander down an impossible path? Gripping the handlebars, she dragged back her attention to the TV.

The couple in the movie were about Merilee’s age. Divorced forever, she had all but given up on the possibility of romance. But she really wasn’t too old, or was she? The attractive, middle-aged actors on the screen swooned in a passionate affair, but they had personal trainers, wardrobe stylists, and lavish homes in Hollywood. They had nothing in common with real life in Goldview, a budding entrepreneur, and a hardworking farmer.

How did Ross feel about romance? He certainly didn’t give her any indication he viewed her as anything more than a demanding tour guide. So why did she even picture him outside of work? A long-time widower who seldom left his farm couldn’t possibly be the right guy. Shaking her head, she pedaled hard until she huffed and burned away a surprising tingle in her limbs. Instead of daydreaming of temptations, she’d focus on priorities for the day.

Number one was add more Christmas decorations to the house. In the excitement of launching the tours, she neglected a project she usually loved.

Number two was wrap gifts. She needed to send them to Parker, Simon, and their wives before the looming mail deadline.

Number three was deal with Ross. A somber Santa dragged down a festive atmosphere. She needed a positive tour partner who would do more than just drive the bus. Her ideal driver interacted with guests and added to their fun. He also needed to pitch in wherever needed. Sure, she miscounted and forgot Caleb at the bakery, but Ross could have double-checked the passenger list.
